Six Notable Business Associations for Entrepreneurial Women

Whether you're just starting to pitch your business idea to investors, or you've been up and running for years, sometimes you need a little boost. This could mean hearing about new ways to do the same old thing or getting some words of encouragement from someone just like you who's running her own firm.

When you join a women's business association, you can find all of this and much more. And what better time than this month of Women's History and International Women's Day (March 8) to get started? The following six organizations are the largest and best-established groups supporting entrepreneurial women.

1. NAWBO says "Get a seat at the table."

The National Association for Women Business Owners (NAWBO) is more than 11 million members strong nationwide. Its mission: "Get a seat at the table or build your own table, and make sure to include other women."

Tiered membership plans start at the very specific amount of $359.40 per year, plus a one-time initiation fee of $100—with discounts available. Basic Membership provides access to the national membership directory, webinars, legislative updates, and numerous discounts on business services. Join a local chapter or be a virtual member.

2. USWCC advocates for women's economic priorities.

Founded in 2001, the U.S. Women's Chamber of Commerce (USWCC) helps women develop leadership skills, seek and win more government contracts, and influence government economic policies. Support in these areas is more vital than ever, and the USWCC is there to help.

To get the most from this group, business owners will do well to buy the Business membership ($199 per year) or the Supplier Membership ($395* per year). The latter tier includes discounts on certifications as a women-owned business and event discounts.

3. eWomen Network makes a one-million-dollar proposition.

The global eWomen Network's key goal is to "help one million fulfilled women each achieve one million in annual revenue." Its membership comprises more than 500,000 entrepreneurs throughout the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia.

Members get access to peer coaching, mentorship and motivation. Benefits include a directory listing, discounts, and even the opportunity to do speaking engagements in your area(s) of expertise. Tiered memberships include the Essential membership and a Lifetime Membership plan. (Sign up on the organization's website for pricing.)

4. OWBO leverages the SBA for outreach.

Operated by the SBA, the Office of Women's Business Ownership runs a national network of nearly 100 Women's Business Centers. These provide training in finance, management, marketing, and technology. What's more, they can provide guidance in how to procure federal contracts and access capital, through the SBA's well-established financial and procurement assistance programs.

5. Ellevate Network: Driven by environmental and social consciousness.

As a registered B Corp certified for its social impact, Ellevate Network is a business committed to solving social and environmental problems. The group is built on dedicated teams, or "squads," committed to helping every member advance. Likewise, special programs help members' boost their female employees' career development. A robust events calendar and opportunities put you in touch with experts and peers. Check out its membership tiers for more information on benefits.

6. WBENC: Setting standards.

Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) provides a national standard of certification for women-owned businesses. It also offers resources for networking, education, and business development. WBENC aims to create a more inclusive and diverse business environment by connecting women entrepreneurs with corporate and government partners. Visit the site for membership eligibility information.
